| 86 | MEUNIER, C.; ESPESSER, R. Vowel reduction in conversational speech: the role of lexical factors. Journal of Phonetics. | Données primaires (corpus) Vidéos du corpus CID (sldr000027) | This study deals with "vowel reduction", i.e. an undershoot phenomenon (unreached targets) related to shortened durations, which leads to a minimised vowel space. Our aim is to evaluate the role of vowel position in the word, word frequency and word morpho-syntactic category in the duration and formant values of 72620 vowels (16 speakers) extracted from a conversational speech corpus. As shown in several studies, we expected that reduced vowels would be more present in high frequency words and function words. Results show a clear lexical rhythmic pattern, with reduced vowels in internal syllables, and unreduced ones in final syllables, on the basis of duration and spectral values. Moreover, a clear effect of lexical category was observed: vowels are more reduced in function words than in content words. The frequency effect is more complex and disappears within each word category, except for content words. We suggest that frequency effect may be attributed to an effect of the frequency of word category. | |
