Multi-language features on the SLDR site

Each item (corpus, ressource, tool, collection) may be independently described in each of the navigation languages as well as in an additional language selected in a directory (see below). We recommend describing corpora in their own language or in a related one.
Each item is assigned a name for each navigation language.
Ifever a name, a description or a keyword list is not available in the navigation language, it will be replaced by its translation in another navigation language, following the priority order en/es/fr/cn.
Geographical data for a corpus should be entered in the language of the corpus.
A description comprises a text field (max 7,000 chars in every language) and a keyword field (max 2,000 chars). As far as corpora are concerned, multilingual fields are also provided for text descriptions of transcription and annotation work.
Two additional fields are available for description and keywords of the item in an alternative language that is generally the language of the associated corpus.

Languages currently enlisted on this site are displayed in pull-down selections when editing items or entering queries.
A 'var' property is assigned to each language in the directory. If 'var' is greater than 0, the language is taken as a variant of another language tagged by its ISO 693-3 code. Thus it is possible to encode languages not enlisted in the norm.

For any description Unicode (UTF8) character sets may be used, including for non-European scripts.
International Phonetic Alphabet may be used with the Unicode CharisSIL4 font available from http://scripts.sil.org/CharisSILfont.
Several scripts may be mixed in the same field.

Descriptive text and keyword fields may be searched in the navigation or the additional language, but at the moment target words must use the glyphs of Western-European languages.
