Pilot project for the storage, long-term preservation and sharing of oral resources (CRDO/CINES/CC-IN2P3/TGE-Adonis)

From September 2008 to December 2010 CRDO has been involved in collaborative experimental work under the banner of TGE-Adonis through its existing sites in Paris (« Gestion documentaire et réservoir de données ») and Aix-en-Provence (« Ressources et outils d’analyse »).

This initial phase of a project for the storage, long-term preservation and mutualized access to oral resources consists of granting producers of oral resources the technical support and computation facilities of Centre informatique de l'enseignement supérieur (CINES) and Centre de calcul de l'Institut national de physique nucléaire et de physique des particules (IN2P3). The framework reads as follows:

• CINES takes care of long-term preservation of objects submitted by CRDO;
• CC-IN2P3 takes care of the sharing of all or part of resources collected by CRDO.

This pilot study is a real-size implementation of the OAIS model in which speech corpora are tested with their structural complexity plus the diversity of digitized material — sound, video, physiological speech parameters etc. — and their annotations in various formats. In the second stage (2010) this framework will be extended to other digital resource centres, with the expectation that all research laboratories — irrespective of their geographical location — will benefit of long-term preservation and sharing via CRDO while retaining the full control and trace of utilisations of resources they have produced.

Choosing oral resources for this pilot study has proved beneficial because of the complexity and diversity of cases that will facilitate its extension to other types of digital resources in the humanities.

Since December 3d, 2009, the entire chain of storage and retrieval of digital items has been fully operational at CRDO (Aix-en-Provence). Long-term preservation has been in production mode since July 16, 2010. Consult our archival scheme!
